Africa Gorilla Habituation
Gorilla habituation is the process of gradually training wild gorillas to accept human interaction for research, conservation and tourism experiences. Gorilla habituation is a gradual process that lasts anything from 2-3 years per gorilla group identified. The activity involves a group of researchers and trackers visiting the wild gorillas daily, using non-threatening tactics to build trust with humans, that they can eventually allow human interaction of not just the routine trackers and researchers but also tourists, on a daily. It is the fully habituated gorilla groups that are availed to tourists for gorilla trekking, and activity that sees 8 tourists in the company of rangers and naturalist guides spending up to one hour with the gorillas. Gorilla habituation as an experience to travelers involves a group of tourists joining the researchers and trackers to visit a semi-habituated gorilla group in their natural habitat. Gorilla habituation allows trackers to spend up to 4 hours with the gorilla family. Gorilla habituation is an intimate activity that involves encountering not yet ready gorillas for human interaction. Only 4 people are permitted per day to join the group of researchers and trackers. The activity is an all-day activity that involves meeting at the park headquarters for a briefing. Thereafter, you embark on a hike through the forest to the gorilla family that is being habituated. Once you meet the gorilla group, you spend up to 4 hours with them studying their behaviors and response to human interaction, training them along with the researchers and trackers, as well as gorilla doctors if lucky.
It is important to note that gorilla habituation in Uganda is only done in the Rushaga sector of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, which is about 10 hours from Kampala or Entebbe but only about 4 hours from Kigali Rwanda. Only 4 people per day are able to take part in the activity. It is therefore very important to book your gorilla habituation safari experience very much in advance that you can secure your permits and guarantee taking part in a gorilla habituation safari in Uganda. As of February 2026, a gorilla habituation permit cost is $1,500 per person. This is almost double the price of a gorilla trekking permit price in Uganda which is currently at $800 only, allowing you only 1 hour with the gorillas compared to habituation which allows you four full hours with the gorillas. When is the best time to go for gorilla habituation, you may be wondering? Gorilla habituation is available all the year round. The best time to go for gorilla habituation however is during the dry season in the months of June to September and December to March. Gorilla permits sell out very fast in the dry season because it also is the peak season of travel. Travelers are advised to book their Uganda gorilla permits well in advance, a least 3 months to the safari. Gorilla habituation is a unique gorilla safari experience which allows you more time with these giant primates. Be sure to reach out to a trusted tour operator to help you organize that ultimate Uganda gorilla trekking safari. Book Uganda safaris with Rowin Africa Tours, to enjoy the different Uganda destinations and activities, including gorilla habituation.
